2 ★ TEVIS FORUM 2019 www.teviscup.org The 2019 Drucilla Barner Award Joe Larkin A s you become a member of the Tevis family, you hear names that evoke respect and reverence. Drucilla Barner is one such name. Dru was Wendell Robie’s executive secretary in the early years of the ride. In 1961, she was the first woman to win the Tevis Cup. Dru dedicated her time, effort, and upon her death, a portion of her es- tate to support the Western States Trail Foundation. In her memory, WSTF annually recognizes individuals who exemplify the dedication, commitment, and spirit that are the legacy of Drucilla Barner. This year, the Western States Trail Foundation is rec- ognizing Joe Larkin for his distinguished service over the years. The Tevis course is 100 miles of rugged canyons and remote back country trails. When those trails call out for tree removal or tread repair, Joe has been there since the early 1980s. He is not your typical “mountain man,” and when he starts talking, be ready for a sto- ry with a bit of a sideways twist as Joe has a wicked dry sense of humor. He has always thrived in the outdoors as an avid skier, hiker, runner, and horseman. Joe has finished the Tevis 10 times, served on the WSTF Board of Governors, served as the Assistant Ride Director, as a member of the Ride Committee, and has been our liaison to ASRA for equestrian trails in the Auburn State Recreation Area. His technology and software background has made him a very valuable asset on the records management team of the annual ride. His technology skills and his physical prowess out on the trail for nearly 40 years working to keep the trails safe and clear have been noticed and valued by the WSTF. Thank you, Joe, for your dedication and selflessness in helping to make the Tevis a world class event for several decades. You are truly deserving of this high praise and prestigious award.
