The 2019 Ride marks my ninth year as the Ride Director, so this is my ninth Forum letter. I thought long and hard about this message to find inspiration. Of course, I had to look no fur- ther than Julie Suhr’s great book “10 feet Tall, Still.” Julie was the first person to earn 20 Tevis buckles, has earned a total of 22 completions, is the mother of 34 buckle winner, Barbara White, and widely known as the “grand dame” of our sport by dem- onstrating grace, sportsmanship, poise and compassion for other riders and her horses. You and your horse have most likely traveled a course that looks like this: You began working many months ago to train and condition for a run at the Tevis. During those months you rode a roller coaster. Is my horse strong enough? Oh, yeah, he (forgive my use of the masculine pronoun; we have many great mares who succeed in endurance but for simplicity, I’ll use he) is getting so strong I could win the ride. Is he mature enough? Is he trustworthy and sensible? Yes, he’s so easy on himself he is going to cruise through. Is he sound enough? He is so “cat-like” over the rocks, he will pick his way through a mine field like Granite Chief! As the ride gets closer, you start reconsidering. A month out you are thinking, he may not actually win, but I’m sure we can top ten. The week before, you are thinking, “I’ll take a buckle any buckle will do. I don’t care if we take all 24 hours to get to Auburn, to finish is to win! For real!” You service the rig, pack the trailer, check all your gear, verify that you are stocked up on feed and supplements. Opps – scratch that, I mean August 17th. While this is not a final decision as I write this article, it is a strong possibil- ity that the date changed due to concerns over excessive snow. If the change did occur, I hope that the change in the dates did not cause you any (major) problem. I want you to know that the Board of Governors does not take changing the dates lightly. Many years ago, I remember reading a list of the dates for the next 20 Tevis rides which created confidence in my planning as a rider. Some ride dates were in July and some were in August. The fluctuating dates were a tradition based on utiliz- ing the full moon. As you know, Tevis precedes by many decades the invention of glow bars and small head lamps that can be worn on helmets. Since the first ride in 1955, Tevis was held as early as July 10th in 1965 and as late as August 18th in 1956. These dates, of course, exclude the 56th Tevis which was held on October 8, 2011 due to an excessive snow pack on the original ride date. When the Tevis ride dates are chosen, the dates are based on the full moons
