Tevis Forum 2022

14 - TEVIS FORUM 2022 www.teviscup.org James Ben Ali Haggin met Lloyd Tevis in the California gold fields. By 1853, Haggin and Tevis had moved to San Francisco where they established a successful law practice together. Haggin raised Thoroughbred horses on his ranch in Sacramento, and in 1886, his horse Ben Ali won the Kentucky Derby. In 1964, Louis Haggin of Versailles, Kentucky, donated the James Ben Ali Haggin Cup in honor of his grandfather. It was to be awarded to the horse among the first ten to finish considered, as Lloyd Tevis (Lloyd Tevis’s grandson and co-donor of the Tevis Cup Award) stated, “to be in the most superior condition.” The James Ben Ali Haggin Cup shall be awarded to the horse among the first ten to finish judged to be in the most superior physical condition by the Veterinary Committee. The rider must have exhib- ited a level of horsemanship and sportsmanship equal to the prestige of the award based on the observations of the Cup Committee to be eligible to present for the Haggin Cup. The Cup Committee shall observe the contestants beginning at check-in and throughout the Ride. The Veterinary Committee will examine the horses presented for the Haggin Cup judging on Sunday morning for soundness, metabolic recovery, and physical condition. Weight and time shall not be considered in the judging. The Veterinary Committee shall award the Haggin Cup to the horse they determine to be “in the most superior physical condition.” YEAR RIDER HORSE BREED SEX AGE 1964 Paige Harper Keno Arabian G 6 1965 Wendell Robie Siri Arabian S 6 1966 Frank Moan Barney TB/Quarter G 7 1967 Bud Dardi Pancho 1/2 Arabian G 11 1968 Paige Harper Raskela Arabian S 7 1969 Walter Tibbitts Ruff Spots Banner Appaloosa G 10 1970 Suzanne Morstad Rajah 1/2 Arabian G 6 1971 Vicki Anderson Sheba 3/4 Arabian M 9 1972 Hal Hall El Karbaj Arabian G 6 1973 Minette Rice-Edwards Bright Hope Anglo/Arab M 8 1974 Eva Taylor Hugo Mule G 9 1975 Wiggy Wisdom Narabi Arabian G 8 1976 Sam Arnold R.C.
