Photograph by Lynne Glazer W elcome to the 56th Annual Western States 100 Mile One Day Ride, known around the world as the “Tevis Cup.” I wish all of you — riders, horses, crews, spectators—a great adventure. I would like to personally thank the 35 members of the Board of Gov- ernors of the Western States Trail Foundation for their year-round com- mitment and the 800 plus volunteers who make this event what it is today. The Western States Trail Foun- dation would like to recognize and thank the many sponsors, grantors, advertisers, and individual donors who have contributed to the success of the 2011 ride. Their support enables us not only to put on the Ride once a year, but also to preserve and improve this his- toric 100 mile trail, to publish the Tevis Forum, to support equine research and to educate the public on the rich history of both the trail and the Ride. I look forward to meeting many of you, and am honored to be serving as WSTF President. It’s my mission to support our efforts in ensuring that we leave the legacy of Western States Trail for our grand- children’s grandchildren and beyond. Rest assured that our organization and volunteers will do our part to ensure that the trail is ready and safe for your 100-mile challenge. ★ Editor’s Note: Kathie Perry is the first woman in the history of the Western States Trail Foundation (founded in 1955) to hold the office of President. Kathie won the Tevis in 1978 on 12-year-old Arab gelding Prince Koslaif in a riding time of 12:17. She earned her 20th buckle in 2010. O ur goal for the 2011 Tevis is to improve the ride experience for riders, crew, volunteers and the community. The Ride Committee, head volunteers and veterinarians are focused on helping riders safely reach the finish line and having them take home memories that will last a lifetime. The production of the Tevis event is a year-long, on-going adven- ture for those who dedicate countless hours on behalf of Wendell Robie’s legacy. As Ride Director for this year’s event, I have had the pleasure and privilege of being surrounded by a Ride Committee teeming with talent. I want to give a special thank you to past Ride Director Mike Pickett for mentoring me and this committee. I’ve been associatedwith the Tevis since 1974 as a ride completer, crew, member of the Board of Governors, and now as Ride Director. My family of four has 23 buckles (earned from top ten to middle to back of the pack).
