Tevis Forum 2011

Thank you The Western States Trail Foundation extends heartfelt gratitude to Candi and Larry Suddjian for their years of dedication, loyalty and vision. The Foundation is proud to dedicate the 2011 Tevis Ride in their honor. WSTF RECOLLECTIONS from Larry & Candi Suddjian Following are the recollections during our involvement with the Western States Trail Foundation: • During 1990 our training as Office Manager (Candi) and Ride Director (Larry) was conducted by Jim and Shirley Humphrey. Lots to learn but they did a great job in teaching us the ropes. • A highlight was the nationwide support the WSTF received in the effort to save No Hands Bridge. The support was successful in getting congressional funding for the repairs to the Mt. Quarries Railroad Bridge. • We remember the task of collecting written waivers from out-of-state horses coming into Robie Park. Some sort of medical outbreak caused the State of Californi to insist all out of state horses were properly vaccinated. • I remember the helicopter ride PG&E provided so I could check out the level of the river crossing anticipated on Ride day. Rafters wanted releases at Ox Bow Reservoir increased so they could get more use of the river. • Acting on a suggestion from a participant in past Rides, we reactivated the Wed. BBQ at the Gold Country Fairgrounds. Native Sons of the Golden West provided the BBQ as a fund raiser for their charitable efforts. • “Save the Trail Campaign” coordinated by Kate Riordan, Heather Davis and Karen Nelson. • Creation of the Tevis Forum by Kate Riordan and Heather Davis • FOWSTA vision as suggested by Karen Nelson and carried out by Heather Davis and Kate Riordan. • Will never forget the couple who showed up at Robie Park with their Tennessee Walkers and entered the Ride. They had heard about the Ride and thought that it would be a nice ride to take. After we realized they were not prepared to accomplish an event such as The Tevis Ride we gave them their entry fee back. • Sally Toye was visiting Robie Park from England and thought it would be a nice event to try. After arriving at Robie Park she gathered enough riding gear and secured a horse, entered and finished the Ride. • Trail marking with the new fiberglass stakes along the entire Western States Trail. • Establishment of the Fun Ride so all could experience the splendor of the Trail from the Mill Site to Michigan Bluff and the Mill Site to Francisco’s. • Marking the trail with Bill Pieper, my grandsons Jake and Zak, and whoever wanted to ride along in “The Piepermobile.” We would meet at Baker’s Square in Auburn then head out to Dusty Corners then to Robinson Flat. This was a tradition that took place the weekend before the Ride and went on until I retired in 1999. • Field trip with the Tevis Cup and Haggin Cup to an AERC convention in Oregon. Wanted to be sure everyone had the opportunity to see a part of history. • Meeting with Bob Suhr after the Ride to review the program for the awards banquet. It was always a pleasure to meet with Bob as he was a wealth of information and advice. • Jack Veal and his leading of the pledge of allegiance during the awards banquet. • Display case for the Haggin Cup and the Tevis Cup, and other artifacts, fabricated and donated by Ashland Glass & Millwork, which was placed at the Auburn City Hall so all could see the famous WSTF stuff. • We remember the transition from the WSTF Apple computer to PC format and the two years the Rider entry list was messed up by LAS just after the Rider check-in was completed. Everything needed to be reconstructed before the Ride. This issue was kept confidential, the marriage survived and now the truth comes out. After the entry list was completed printed copies were made at Robie Park and distributed to Head Volunteers after leaving the park. A copy was always dropped off at KAHI when Matt Scribner was doing the Sat. morning show. • We recall the entrants’ overall excitement and enthusiasm which was always a pleasure to experience. hank you The Western States Trail Foundation extends heartfelt gratitude to Candi and Larry Suddjian for their years of dedication, loyalty and vision.
