Paper & Print Eco-Friendly - page 12

Paper canbe recycledonlyabout five
timesbefore the fibersbecome too short
andweakandbreakdown. That’swhy
weneeda continuous supply of fresh
fiber harvested from responsibly
managed forests. In theU.S. and
Canada themajority of this fresh fiber
comes from sawmill chipswhichare
aby-product of lumber production.
Globally, 82%of recoveredpaper is
used in tissue, container boards, and
other packagingor boardproducts.
Approximately6%of the recovered
paper supply isused inprintingand
writinggrades.
16
Without freshwood, theproductionof
paperwill ceasewithin6 to 18months
dependingon thepaper grade.
17
At least 15%of paper productsare
permanently removed from thefiber
cycle, suchasone-timeuseproducts
(ex: tissues, sanitaryproducts,medical
supplies) andbooksor files that are
stored for longperiodsof time.
18
Cardboardandboxboard canbe
madeentirely from recycledfiber
andmeet all their performance
requirements. Products suchasgraphic
paper requiremore cleaning, filtering
andprocessingof recoveredfiber and it
can sometimesbemoreeconomically
andenvironmentally sustainable touse
freshwoodfiber.

WHILE IT’S TRUE THATCOLLECTING

ENVIRONMENT, THEREAREMANY
OTHER FACTORS IN THE LIFECYCLE
OF PAPERWHICH INFLUENCE ITS
ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT.
“Tomake theglobal fiber
cyclework, a continual
input of 35% to65%of
freshwoodfiber is needed
dependingon thegradeof
thepapermanufactured.”
