There have already been reports of Great Results fromour riders so I can’t wait to hear/see how they all do. It is such a HUGEACCOMPLISHMENT to QUALIFYTO RIDE THERE, but then to actually be able to go and show against the best of the rest of the country is just AMAZING! CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE WHO SHOWED BACK THERE!!! Also, as I am writing this, I am working on getting my Class A, Commercial Drivers License….. Anyone who has been listening to Kevin for the last few years (do we?) knows that this license is necessary if your trailer weighs more than 10,000 lbs. And mine does. The first thing that I had to do was take and pass a physical. Then, it takes a lot of studying as I had to take and pass 3 written tests. A regular written driving test and a written test on the Commercial Drivers Handbook. I passed both of those 2 just fine. Then there was the Combination Vehicle written test. That section of the handbook talks about 5th wheel hitches, like semi trucks have. Since I have a goose neck hitch, I didn’t pay that much attention to that section. WELL, that is what all of the test questions ask about. So, I failed that test the first time I took it… Then I took about an hour and studied that section of the handbook again, which you can do, took the test and passed it, whew! It helped that I had just taken the test so I knew what the questions would be. So, then I got a ‘learners permit’ for 2 weeks, and was scheduled to take the Vehicle Inspection and Driving Test. That was yesterday. There are 2 sections in the handbook that talk about the Vehicle Inspection, section 2, which is what I studied, and section 11, which it turned out is what I needed to have studied. Needless to say, I did not pass the Vehicle Inspection but the examiner was very good about going over everything with me so I, now, understand what I have to study. So, I am studying and studying and studying! I retest next Saturday. And what I really have to do is MEMORIZE that part of the handbook, as they want you to say exactly what the handbook says. And you have to show everything and talk about everything the way the handbook does. AND, since I just have a ‘learners permit’, I am not allowed to haul my trailer without someone with a Commercial License riding with me! Fortunately, I do have a local friend who has a Commercial License and he is willing to ride along with me to these tests. I have to pass the Vehicle Inspection before I can do the driving test. I’m hoping to have good news on this front in my next President’s Column. I hope everyone had a GREAT THANKSGIVING! Dec er 2019, Vol 25, Issue 12
