TEVIS FORUM 2022 - 27 www.teviscup.org Crewing and the Tevis Rules by Debby Lyon Part of crewing for the Tevis is knowing the rules and making sure that no infraction of the rules affects your rider’s participation and finish of the Tevis. This includes actions of the crew members and the rider. The rules are posted on the Tevis website and all riders receive a copy of the Rulebook. This article will not cover all the rules but will point out some of the gray areas where a rider or crew member has gotten in trouble without meaning to. Crews can be helpful by knowing the rules and preventing problems for their rider. Tevis Rules and AERC Rules Tevis started before the formation of the American Endur- ance Ride Conference (AERC). Although most of the Tevis rules and the AERC ones agree, where there are differences, the Tevis rules apply. One example is the Haggin Cup judging. Tevis does not use the AERC Best Condition judging system. The Haggin Cup judging is unique. Another example is weight divisions. Tevis does not rec- ognize or give awards for weight divisions. Tevis also requires riders to qualify to ride by completing 300 miles in events of 35 miles or more in events sanctioned by a recognized distance organization. Junior rules also differ. Riders under 18 must have a spon- sor at least 21 years old. If you are crewing for a junior, you might need to help find an alternate sponsor if your junior’s sponsor is unable to continue. The new sponsor must be ap- proved by the Ride Director, Cup Committee member or the Head Volunteer at the checkpoint. Juniors may list alternate sponsors before the ride. The junior may change to a backup sponsor at any time. What is not permitted is soliciting a new sponsor during the ride for the sole purpose of increasing speed or competitive position. Pre-Ride Meeting Be sure that you and your rider attend the pre-ride meet- ing. There is always much useful information shared at this meeting and last minute changes, if any, are disclosed here. This meeting is also fun and exciting. The Start Crews can help their riders get ready for the start. All riders must start within 15 minutes of the start time. As crew, please do not get in the way of the riders trying to get to the start. Please do not start your vehicles or turn on your head- lights before the time announced at the pre-ride meeting. You are there to help, not hinder riders.
