TEVIS FORUM 2022 - 23 www.teviscup.org (continued on page 25) Tribute to Sandy Schuler: Veterinarian, Equestrian, Mentor, and Friend On a beautiful spring day, my daughter Sally and I headed out for an afternoon ride at Pt. Reyes National Sea- shore in California. There was one other horse trailer at the trailhead. It was between storms, and we were excited to be out on the trail. A tall, blonde, and very fit woman came around a curve, nimbly negotiating the trail, head down, horse in hand, mov- ing at a good clip. She was a familiar and formidable force: our dear friend Dr. Cassandra (Sandy) Schul- er. Sandy has been riding and training in the Point Reyes area since she made her home in Petaluma forty years ago. She’s also an endurance legend: winner of the 1st Endurance World Championships in Rome in 1986, Sandy has logged tens of thousands of miles on the trail, earning 22 Tevis buckles. Despite her many ac- complishments, Sandy is very modest, so it wasn’t easy to corral her into talking about herself, but I managed to get her to share some stories about the thirty times she has saddled up and set out along the Tevis trail.
