12 - TEVIS FORUM 2022 www.teviscup.org The horses, stagecoaches and express riders of Wells Fargo & Co. are significant symbols of the making of the Old West. Lloyd Tevis, president of Wells Fargo & Co. from 1872 to 1892, epitomizes the spirit of that era. He came to California in a covered wagon in 1849, and of course tried his hand at digging for gold in the Sierra Nevada foothills. It is a most fitting honor that the Lloyd Tevis Cup was established in memory of this pioneer entrepreneur as a perpetual trophy award for the Western States Trail Ride by grandsons Will, Gordon and Lloyd Tevis. In 1959, the Lloyd Tevis Cup was established as an award of distinguish- ing merit for the fastest riding time and outstanding horsemanship and sportsmanship in the Western States 100-Mile One-Day Ride. Participants who complete the Western States 100-Miles One-Day Ride are rewarded with a commemorative silver buckle or certificate. The buckle was inspired by the famous historical painting by Herman Hansen entitled “Indian Gauntlet” depicting the speed and courage of the Pony Express rider. The completion buck- les are crafted for The Western States Trail Foundation by Comstock Heritage Silversmiths of Reno, Nevada. Going back to the earliest days of the Tevis Cup, we have been proud to work with the Stegman family, owners and operators of Comstock Heritage since its founding in 1886. We thank the Stegman family for their continued generous support to the Tevis Ride.
