My mare Treasure did amazing things for me. It started with a trip to Italy where she won the 100 mile Italian National Championship/World Championship test event, where we brought back some American pride. After that, she drove from Italy to Amsterdam, flew to New York, drove to Florida, rested one week, and then drove to California. She rested a bit more and then had a very short re-intro to themountains and just seven weeks from her Italian win, she was at the Tevis. This mare is so special tome. I first met Treasure when I started shoeing her as a late 2 year old at the race- track. She belonged to a farm we have worked with for many years, Cre Run. I told them when she’s done running, I absolutely wanted to buy her. We bought her as a late 3 year old after she ran a season. I rode her lightly and then bred her to TH Richie as a 4 year old. When Treasure was 6 years old, I did one workout on her that showed me her potential and it was very ex- citing. I let her develop before asking anything of her. Her first 100 ever was Tevis 2016, where she finished 3rd and won the Haggin Cup. Before winning, she had just come off a 100 mile win (being the first American horse to win an overseas international race since the 1990’s). Treasure does all her rides in a rope halter from start to finish. This was her fourth Tevis and the entire day was memorable. I can’t pick a single moment at Tevis that was the best as it was such a great time the entire way. The day flew by as there were a few riders setting a blistering pace dur- ing the middle of the ride. Because of this, I made it to the Lower Quarry vet check with a little bit of daylight left. Treasure was on cruise control as she now knows the trail so well. Cantering across No Hands Bridge was pretty fun. Those last few miles of trail in the dark were so amazing, alone with my special friend. No worries in the world, just enjoying each other’s company. I look forward to many more miles at the Tevis with this mare.
