Somewhere, out there in the darkness, there is a trail. It’s not just any trail. It’s a trail with over a century and a half of history. There are the muffled hooves of pack mules carrying people and equipment to the Comstock Lode from the gold fields of Auburn. In the opposite direction, it carried settlers from Squaw Valley to the promised land, the rich farm country of the San Joaquin Val- ley. Tortuous though it was, it was the most direct route, the Placer Immigrant Road, and for decades it was heavily traveled. Then, as less arduous roads de- veloped, it slowly disappeared. All that remained were the blazes hacked in the bark of trees along the way. It remained that way for fifty years, until a curious Sher- iff from Tahoe City discovered some blazes and began to piece it back together. He built a rock monument on the Sierra Crest that bears his name. We owe a debt of gratitude to his love of riding, and his curi- osity. Robert Watson showed us the way. Watson must have told Wendell Robie about it. He and some friends rode it over four days in the thirties and made a home movie that sat in an attic for over fifty years. That ride planted the seed for what would become the most famous and arguably the most challenging ride in the world. That trail spawned an internationally famous ride, The Western States Trail Ride, affectionately known as the Tevis Cup. For six decades it has been the ulti- mate goal for horse persons who want to test themselves and their horses against that famous trail. I was bitten by the Tevis bug after I had successfully completed the Western States Run in 1984, and had been introduced to Ride and Tie by my best friend, Jim Hurley. Chuck Stalley is guilty of aiding and abetting by finding Deb and me two capable horses, Shekh Isa, and Firetrek. Fast forward twenty-five years and I find myself the president of the hardest working, most committed group of Tevis addicts anywhere, the Board of Governors.
