I am proud to be associated with an endurance ride that cannot just survive, but thrive, carrying the rich legacy of all those tough pioneers, explorers and adventurers who have gone before us. The trail is in exceptional condition from sev- eral years of intense, concentrated effort both financially and physically. The trail bed in the Truckee Highway 89 area has been worked to get you through the rocks. The canyons have beenmaintained to remove fallen trees caused by fire, wind and rain, and the swinging bridge is back. This trail is one of a kind and the more time youspend on it, the more you appreciate it. This year’s Tevis experience will include offering a 60 th anniversary buckle to commemorate the 60 th WSTR. As a side note, this year also marks the 50 th year of awarding the Haggin Cup. The enthusiasm is building as August 1 grows near. The ride committee offers you a choice this year of receiving the 60 th anniversary buckle or a traditional “award” buckle. Participants can sign up for their buckle choice before the ride or order their buckles after the ride. See the entry form for details. I was talk- ing to our ride director, Chuck Stalley, about what to write in this President‘s Message. He said that since there was no devastating fire in the past year, and we are not expecting to be snowed out in August during this historic drought, I should write about this being the 60 th year of this ride. How many of you were born 60 years ago when the first ride was held in 1955? To give you context, Dwight Eisenhower was President and Rosa Parks refused to sit in the back of a bus in 1955. Tevis is a ride that consumes people’s lives. Froma personal perspectivemymother completed her only Tevis start in 1967, I was 5. I crewedmy first Tevis in 1976, startedmy first Tevis in 1988, received my first Tevis buckle in 1992, and I have been involved for four decades; and I still feel like the newby. Over these years, there have been two riders who have won 30+ buckles and another six who have won 20+ buckles. My wife says one is plenty. I spent these years watching the Stalleys, the Halls, the Suhrs/Whites, John McCu l l o u g h , Sandy Schuler, Kathi e Pe rr y, and s o many o t h e r s w h o based at least 6 months of every year preparing for another Te- vis start. Like so many events of Tevis’s stature, i n v o l v e m e n t and participa- tion becomes a life obsession. Tevis is so much more than just the old- est modern endurance ride. It is a legacy, and 60 years of rides says so. While the WSTF is responsible for making sure the Tevis Cup Ride occurs every year, it has other equally important responsibilities. Probably the greatest work being done by the WSTF is its work in preserving and maintaining the trail. Just in the past few years, the WSTF has been involved in restoring the trail after the American Fire, rebuilding the Swinging Bridge, participating in efforts to maintain public access across large stretches of the trail that if lost would end the historical route from the Tahoe Basin to the western slope of the Sierras, the development of the Chickenhawk/Pieper Junction trailhead, and considerable amount of work with the public agencies that oversee the lands that the Western States trail traverses.
