He is an AFA-certified Jour- neyman farrier and has been shoeing horses for 58 years. Wayne is a man of skill with a heart of gold. He was one of the founding members of the California State Farriers’ Association and served as the president for 4 years. The organization was formed to improve education among farriers, but also has as its mission the responsibility of members to help other farriers within the associa- tionwho get hurt. Wayne has been known to go to the aid of injured colleagues and work for days shoeing the client horses of a laid-up farrier and then turning the income over to his fellow CSFA mem- ber. Wayne has mentoredmany apprentices in his long career, created and participated in shoeing research, and (in his prime) been a champion farrier in both speed and quality at the BishopMule Days Celebrations on Memorial Day weekend. He has been shoeing at Tevis for 30 years and never missed a year. He was hon- ored with a Friend of the Tevis recognition plaque at the 2013 Awards Banquet. We connected with Wayne in the mid 70’s when we moved to Chico, and he has been our shoer for close to 40 years. There are 27 Tevis buck- les in our house, and all 27 of those horses were managed by Wayne. It’s easy to have a love/hate relationship with your farrier, unless you have Wayne on the job!
