Tevis Forum 2013

80 ★ TEVIS FORUM 2013 they arrive at the Overlook to meet vet criteria at McCann Stadium. The new signature entry program is aimed at riders who would like to give back to the trail by signing up for this all inclusive entry. The entry fee for this program is $1,500 and includes some re- ally cool personalized gear for you and your horse. The largest part of the entry, a donation of $800, goes toward trail work and repair for which you receive a letter verifying the tax deductible por- tion of this entry. Further information on this entry option in included in the Tevis Forum , and we encourage riders to take a serious look at this program. For the second year, look for Tevis Elite hats at the major vet checks. We anticipate that some riders would benefit from advice and assistance to get through vet checks efficiently and expediently. Riders who have earned their 1000-mile buckles who are not rid- ing this year have volunteered to make themselves available to help, advise and answer questions of riders, which is something ride officials cannot do. If it turns out that they just offer encour- agement to you, great! These people will be the most knowledgeable source of Tevis information and strategy you can assemble. You just need to know they are available to help if you would like to access their talents. WSTF is offering an unprecedented junior programwhich allows junior rid- ers to ride at no cost. It is offered to the first fifteen juniors who sign up with a qualified sponsoring rider. Juniors are the future of the sport and we, along with EasyCare and Echo Valley Feed, are proud to offer financial support for their participation this year. The Tevis trail is many miles of single track trail and because of these conditions, riders need to know trail riding etiquette. Successful Tevis riders practice good sportsmanship and let people pass when the trail is asked for and the conditions are safe. Water for many of the stops is hauled in on ride day and is a limited resource. Riders and crew are asked to preserve water to insure there is enough for all the riders and horses. Please look for an article in the Forum detailing both of these critical issues so all riders can have an enjoyable trip to Auburn. The Cup Committee in the bright yellow vests are spread along the trial to solve problems and make sure the rules are enforced fairly. Four riders are going for their decade buckles and everyone on the BOG would like to wish them luck. Those riders include Danny Grant of British Columbia, Canada, who is the Master of Ceremonies for our banquet, and Shellie Hatfield our current WSTF Treasurer fromLoomis, California, who are going for their 1000 mile buckles. Pat Chappell of Rocklin, California, is going for her 2000 mile, twenty-day buckle. Hal Hall of Auburn is going for his 3000 mile, thirty-day buckle this year as well. The WSTF Trail Committee is hard at workmaking the trail safer for riders. Much of the work has been done after Foresthill all the way to Auburn. They restore the trail bed and cut back en- croaching brush and fallen trees. This is an endless job that results in a smoother trail and happy horses and riders. To all the riders and crews, I wish you the best of luck and fondmemories in 2013, for this is not a ride for the faint of heart.
