Photograph by Lynn Glazer. P reserving the 100-mile Western States Trail over the Sierra Moun- tains is the primary mission of the Western States Trail Foundation . To keep the trail open and in good repair, the Founda- tion, along with the Western States Endurance Run and other equestrian volunteer groups, annually contracts $20,000 to$30,000 in trail maintenance and improvement projects. We start in the fall after the Ride and continue right up to the very day of the Ride. Another part of preserving the trail for the future generations is public edu- cation. TheWSTFHistorical Committee produced the film “They Crossed The Mountains” to share the history and unique character of this special trail. The Education Committee puts on the one- and two-day Tevis Educational Rides so that first time riders and those who just want to see the trail, but not all in one day, can experience the trail first hand. Each year we set funds aside for vet- erinary research projects at U.C. Davis to better understand and care for these incredible athletes who so gallantly carry us 100 miles in one day. All that we do is possible only be- cause of the dedication and generosity of those who have come before andwho continue to support the preservation of the Western States Trail. This year you will be supported by your crews, the veterinarians, management and more than 800 volunteers as you earn a buckle and continue this great tradition. (Continued on page 68) W elcome to the 57 th running of the Western States Trail Ride. I am excited to report on some of the im- provement for this year’s Ride. First, I’d like to commend the Ride Committee for instituting the Legacy Buckle Awards. This truly forward- thinking concept of donating and reis- suing buckles to first time riders. The buckles will be engraved on the back with the original rider’s name, horse’s name and the year it was first awarded. Several multi-year finishers have asked if they can sign up for the Legacy pro- gram but it is reserved for first-time buckle recipients. Many exciting changes are happen- ing around the staging area off Pleasant Avenue in Auburn. The Western States Trail Foundation has taken over the management of the Auburn Overlook Staging Area as well as the adjacent two- acre parcel on the north side of the canal which allows improved access to theWestern States Trail. Nowwhen you come to Auburn to ride, your parking donation goes directly to WSTF to off- Ride Date August 4th, 2012
