Only four men could work at a time and two were engaged with throwing out water from the hole. Another man would throw back the material that caved in from the sides of the trench. The fourth man would mine the rich material. Ob- servers saw the gold on the sides of the trench in apparent hands-full while waiting for the men working it to get it out. Reports indicate that the claim could only be readied for op- eration during three hours a day for the either days on which it was carried on, and a yield of $4,600 was reported for this period in 1851. In the following years water and cave-in conditions made work difficult to keep the operation going. At one time the claim was worked to a depth of 90 feet and in placed 60 feet wide with many thousands of dollars of gold recovered. However, men working the operation stated the work was dangerous because of large heavy wedge-shaped masses of limestone which were embedded in the deep gravel deposit. There was thought that had there been a good method of working the Big Crevice, that it might have yielded over a million dollars in gold production. Although an attempt was made by a Sacramento company prior to 1880 to drive pipes into the Big Crevice and work the gravel there were no other known attempts to derive more gold. In Honor of Claude Pacheco Friend, horseman, veterinarian You are missed, Claude, you are missed MEMORIUM BY DAVE WALTERS Store TEVIS www.teviscup.org click on Tevis Store; check out the sale!
