Our group took horses and riders and we were fortunate to have a vet coming with our group, Lauren Winfield. Lauren has expressed some simple things we can do to keep our horses as safe as possible. First and foremost she watches all the reports and only when it appears safe does she give us the “go ahead” to take our much loved horses away from home. She suggests making sure our horses are up to date on their flu rhino shots. We usually put up some nice stall guards so our horses can stick their heads out and “be with us” but at this first show we kept the stall doors closed. She kept each group with their own barn with no close proximity to other horses. You should take your horses temperature every day when staying at a competition facility and daily for two weeks afterwards. The show was fabulous! I loved how creative they were with the space in the barns and stalls to keep us all apart, we stayed with our own home barns. My riders and horses all did really well considering the weather changes we had over the week. Wednesday Thursday and Friday were hot hot hot over 90 degrees every day, and Saturday and Sunday were ca ca cold! We got home late Sunday evening and it rained hard all day at our barn on Monday...what is with this weather! Just when I think it has become spring it gets cold again. We had some really fun dinners out at Murieta Inn and Spa with some old friends and some new. It would have been good to get a little sit out by the pool time but of course horse shows are so so busy so no pool time for any of us! The judges forum was really good both Saturday and Sunday with Jane Weatherwax leading the group. It was great to have a confirmation that our scores and comments on what we all see was for the most part exactly the same or within a half a point of each other on a movement. It helps that we were all viewing the arena from the same locations as things look different from your sitting perspective. I am really impressed with the quality of the horses and riders now in California. We saw some really superb rides the first two days and on Saturday and Sunday a few spooky horses! Our wind warnings told us it would be up to 60 mph winds. A couple families stayed in trailers at the showgrounds and they said it was so windy all night Saturday night they felt it blowing the trailer around. We took our tent down just in case and I think it was a good call. I have personally experienced seeing my tent float and bounce down a barn aisle at a horse show. Now it is always staked and or tied down. It was a really good feeling for the riders to get qualifying scores to be prepared for JR/YR championships, RAAC and CDS Championships. There are still more possibilities this spring and part of summer to get qualified. I sure hope you can join us at one of these three prestigious events!
