A
s president
of the West-
ern States Trail
Foundat ion,
I want to wel-
comeall the rid-
ers, volunteers,
and spectators
to the 60
th
An-
niversary Tevis
Ride. Iwas talk-
ing to our ride
director, Chuck
Stalley, about
what towrite in
this President‘sMessage. He said that since
therewasnodevastatingfire inthepastyear,
andwearenotexpectingtobesnowedout in
Augustduringthishistoricdrought, Ishould
write about this being the 60
th
year of this
ride. Howmany of youwere born 60 years
agowhen thefirst ridewasheld in1955?To
give you context, Dwight Eisenhower was
PresidentandRosaParksrefusedtosit inthe
backof abus in1955.
Tevis is a ride that consumes people’s
lives.Fromapersonalperspectivemymother
completedheronlyTevisstart in1967, Iwas
5. IcrewedmyfirstTevis in1976, startedmy
first Tevis in 1988, receivedmy first Tevis
buckle in1992, and Ihavebeen involved for
four decades; and I still feel like the newby.
Over theseyears, therehavebeen two riders
who havewon 30+ buckles and another six
whohavewon20+buckles.Mywifesaysone
is plenty. I spent these years watching the
Stalleys, the Halls, the Suhrs/Whites, John
McCul lough,
Sandy Schuler,
Kathie Perry,
and so many
othe rs who
based at least 6
months of every
year preparing
for another Te-
vis start. Like so
many events of
Tevis’s stature,
involvement
and participa-
tion becomes a
lifeobsession.
Tevis is somuchmore than just theold-
estmodernenduranceride. It isa legacy, and
60yearsof rides says so.While theWSTF is
responsible for making sure the Tevis Cup
Ride occurs every year, it has other equally
important responsibilities. Probably the
greatest work being done by theWSTF is
its work in preserving andmaintaining the
trail. Just in the past few years, theWSTF
has been involved in restoring the trail after
theAmericanFire, rebuilding the Swinging
Bridge, participating in efforts tomaintain
public access across large stretches of the
trail that if lost would end the historical
route from the Tahoe Basin to the western
slope of the Sierras, the development of the
Chickenhawk/Pieper Junction trailhead,
and considerable amount of workwith the
public agencies that oversee the lands that
theWesternStates trail traverses.There are
