What is Breast Cancer Awareness Month About

Breast Cancer Awareness TreeWhat is Breast Cancer Awareness month and why do we celebrate it? It is something I have always known we do in October and always had the basic idea of why we celebrate it but for the last decade I have become more and more involved in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and I decided to really look into what it is that makes October so important to the cause.

A few things we ALL should remember:

  • Breast Cancer Awareness Month is celebrated in many countries across the world to help increase the attention that is needed for the disease. I knew this fact but never took into account that other countries promoted it in the same way we do.
  • Breast Cancer Awareness month helps bring light to early detection and treatments. The woman who started the National Breast Cancer Foundation was diagnosed with Breast Cancer at a very young age and had little information about treatments and the disease itself and wanted to make sure there was more information out there for people who are diagnosed.
  • There are OVER 250,000 new Breast Cancer patients diagnosed each year. I always knew it was one of the most common cancers but that many diagnoses each year is astonishing. Among those diagnoses a little less than half that number are deaths a year because of the horrible disease.
  • With hundreds of thousands of people being diagnosed each year there is still little known as to why so many people are diagnosed. Luckily with early detection the outcomes have become very encouraging for people that are diagnosed. This is why it is so important to get regularly checked, especially if it is something that runs in your family.

There is so much information and statistics that I could go on FOREVER. Please if you do one cool thing to raise awareness in October, educate yourself, your family and your friends. The more we can catch this ugly disease at an early stage the less deaths there will be each year. There are some really great websites below to help educate yourself and get involved!

Winner of Best of the Best

Ad and Plaque

For 13+ years we have been voted Best of the Best by the readers of the Auburn Journal, and we couldn’t be more thankful to our community and our fantastic customers.

Since opening the business in 1946 we have striven to be been involved in the community and has enjoyed giving back. In 1984 Brad and Merrill purchased the business and have since continued to be involved and continue the tradition of giving back and supporting many community events. Being a big part of our community, being involved and giving back is what I am passionate about. I do it because I see a great future for our community and all there is to benefit from for me, our company and my kids.

Besides being such a staple of the community we work hard at being a partner to the land trusts and non-profits locally. We give back to many non-profits and work closely with them to find new ways of attracting donors and new revenue. Using print, email, direct mail, signage and promotional products to elevate their clients message in a cohesive, timely and branded manner. Our clients have seen that the value improves exponentially with a multi-touch approach.

I strongly feel that we are a one of a kind shop in this area with all the equipment and up to date technology that we have in our North Auburn location. Feel free to stop by and see all that we have to offer.

What can YOU build out of a pallet?

If you are on any social media platform you have most likely seen at least one project made out of a recycled pallets, especially if you follow us on social media! There are so many ways to take a plain wooden pallet and make it into something AMAZING and NEW! We ran a contest amongst our employees to see what they could make out of the pallets that our paper is delivered on. It was such a huge success and fun project that we decided to do it again, but this time we are inviting our customers, friends and family to build something.

We started this project because we like the idea of recycling. Here at APi-Marketing we do a lot of that, whether its pallets (our employees are always making stuff from them), 99% of all paper we use, press plates, or just soda cans. We try and let as little go to the landfill as we can.

Project time starts now! Come over to our shop and grab a pallet or two or ten and start building! We get new pallets almost every day so if we don’t have what you are looking for, check back again. Look on Pinterest, Google, any social media platform, or just something you have been contemplating in your head and find a fun, useful or extravagant project to build out of pallets. These projects will be displayed at our VIP Open house in Mid-October. There is a kicker, for those who want to be included in a silent auction on the projects, 100% of the money raised will be donated to a local non profit organization (to be determined prior to event).

How do I win and what do I get you ask? WELL, the winner will be determined by votes cast at the VIP Open House. The winner will receive $250 worth of gift cards to one or more of the following: Flyers Gas Stations, Old Town Pizza, Center for the Arts, Machado Orchards, or Local Heroes (or a combination of them).

Of course there are some rules….

  1. Has to be made mostly of pallets.
  2. Anything added on must be recycled from something else, not purchased new for this project. (Exceptions are anything used to fasten such as nails, glue or staples and anything used to decorate such as paint or stain)
  3. Must “RSVP” your project prior to or on September 11th, 2017 (whether or not it is finished) so we know how many projects to be expecting and to make sure you and a guest are on the list for an invitation to the Open House. http://bit.ly/palletRSVP
  4. Must be able to bring your project to APi-Marketing or arrange for us to pick-up for our VIP Open House in mid October.

That is all, now go have fun and create a new masterpiece!

Be One With Nature

There are many days we like to celebrate here at API-marketing, especially the ones that have to do with the great outdoors. Although we are an indoor company the majority of our employees love the fresh air and serenity of being outside. This year as a group we have decided to celebrate World Environment Day. As a company we work hard to be good to the environment. We have taken out a lot of our landscape in front of our shop, we water as little as possible, we recycle everything we can and we make sure to get outside and enjoy what mother earth has given us. This is why we have chosen to celebrate World Environment Day.

World Environment Day is a day to connect with the environment around you. It is a day that was created to encourage worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. It is a day to take action and do something for our world. Whether doing it locally, nationally or globally take a moment in time to do something that will give back to our future selves. It is something that can be done on your own, with a group or even an organization. This year’s theme is “Connecting people with Nature”. It is telling us to get out and enjoy nature, it’s beauty and the world around us.

Although this wonderful day is falling on Monday June 5th and we can’t close up we have chosen to celebrate in the days leading up to it. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn to see what we have been up to!

Open Type Fonts Have More Fun

Apple and PC dancing
Think of all the great things Mac and PC can accomplish together with Open Type fonts!

For about 12 years now, Windows (PCs) and Apple (Macs) have ended support for Type 1 and True type fonts in favor of Open Type fonts. This doesn’t mean that you can’t still buy a True Type font or that they won’t ever work, but it does mean that you are walking on thin ice. Systems and software are no longer developed with these old fonts in mind, with the exception of Adobe who allows you to put the font in the library of the software using it. Even then, you may still encounter problems. So why switch to Open Type fonts? Why should you give up thousands of dollars worth (if you are an agency) of licenses for fonts?

Banners are Not Business Cards, Part 3

bilboard that says "if you were waiting for a sign, this is it."Maximizing your investment with optimum sign placement

My previous blog talked about maximizing legibility through use of optimum letter fonts, line spacing, and color contrast. With that in mind, placement and location also play an important part in the design process.

Let’s talk about placing your sign on the roadway:

If possible you should try to take advantage of stop signs and lights near your business.

Consumers, who have only a few seconds to allocate to a sign when they are driving, prefer signs that can be located easily, read quickly, with logos that are understandable.

For example, choose a location where drivers have time to react to the sign. At a red light, they’ve got all the time in the world to read the sign and decide to turn.

When they are driving by at normal speeds they have only 2 to 3 seconds to spend reading the sign.

Since weather and wind are factors for outdoor banners, keep these in mind when deciding the best location. Using durable outdoor banner stands along with the strong vinyl material will keep the message out front longer for all to see.

Placing your sign on a structure:

When placing a banner on a wall remember that vinyl banners are not expected to last forever, but with proper installation, you can significantly increase the durability of vinyl banners. Here are a couple tips:

  • Use anchors for every grommet to reinforce the mounting.
  • When installing outdoors on walls of buildings, screw or drill washers and screws directly on the building if permission had been granted to do so. Stretch the Vinyl Banner tight to keep any gusts from pushing it out.
  • If you plan on rotating your banners/signs install eye hooks into the wall instead of screws. Doing this will make the replacement process quicker and more convenient.

Please remember placing a flag, A-frame, banner in front of your business or on the roadway must conform the local rules and regulations set by your county or city.

Battle the Cyber Monsters

Computer viruses are no new concept. We’ve all heard not to open attachments from strangers, not to click on ads, not to type text that is not a website URL into the browser. Well, gone are the days of our computers slowing down when they have viruses. Computers are way more efficient and attackers way more sneaky. You may not even have to click on anything, just load a webpage with ads and a little snippet of something will sit in your computer, waiting for a command from its leader.

One of the growing malware categories is Ransomware. This kind of malware encrypts (or claims to encrypt) your files and hold them for a ransom of hundreds of dollars. One of the most recent variants, CryptoLocker, is getting some attention for it’s seemingly professional assistance in coaching the victim step by step on how to pay the ransom and receive a key to unlock the files (hopefully).

you won't want to see this screen, neither do we!

Thankfully, we have an excellent staff on hand to tell us the latest and greatest scams out there and this helps us make decisions that are safer and more streamlined.

One of the improvements we have made is to stop sending PDF proofs via email. So much malware is sent using attachments in emails that are meant to look like they are coming from somebody in your own office! Be mindful of the language the person in each email with an attachment is using. If you sense something out of character, it is better to call them and see what’s up before going any further. Get verbal confirmation first, open the attachment later.
